Recap
An opinion piece – and a call to (political) arms – by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords about the Senate's vote on gun legislation this week.  "SENATORS say they fear the N.R.A. and the gun lobby. But I think that fear must be nothing compared to the fear the first graders in Sandy Hook Elementary School felt as their lives ended in a hail of bullets. […] To do nothing while others are in danger is not the American way."

Prayer
In the face of all the scriptures that tell us to "be not afraid," God, we ARE.  We are afraid.  All of us.  Afraid, like the parents at Sandy Hook, for our children.  Afraid, like the senators, for our jobs.  Afraid, like the runners in Boston, even to gather – to play, to rejoice.  So our first prayer is that you help us remember all those reasons we shouldn't be afraid (keep the pictures of the first responders in our memory, right beside the 23rd psalm).  But the second prayer, God, is that if this fear isn't going away any time soon, could you help us to use it?  To take this fear, in the quantities we have it, and transform it into action – not the kind of action that seeks vengeance, but the kind that realizes that "to do nothing while others are in danger" is not only "not the American way," but more importantly, not Your way.  In other words, God, can you take this fear, and as each new day dawns, transform it into faith?  Amen.
