The Difference

Excerpt from Luke 4:38-41

"Then he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began to serve them."

Reflection by Felix Carrion

As children it was always so consoling to have a parent watch over us when the common cold or flu made its rounds. Racked with fever and chills we found warmth in their vigil over us. By being there with us, we knew they were rebuking our condition.

Did Jesus really care about Simon's mother-in-law? Did he really care about a high fever? Apparently he did! And this is why this homespun tale makes it into the gospel narratives. Jesus cares enough to inquire about his friend and spend time with her.  Although the moment of healing is reduced in this passage to a few verses, I can imagine that Jesus' time with her was not rushed. What appears to be a "quick-I-have-to-get-on-with-it" healing more likely unfolded intimately and gently.

What ails you? When did the high fever come upon you? Have you had something to eat? Would you like me to bring you a glass of water? Would you like another blanket? Can I fluff up your pillow? Do you remember the last time we laughed so hard we cried?

Let me feel your forehead. Give me your hand. Hold on tight. That son-in-law of yours really loves you. You know I love you, too. You always do so much for us. What a loving presence you are in our lives. We have a lot to learn from you.

"Then he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began to serve them."

It's the loving vigil and simple care we show others that makes the difference.

Prayer

O God, may we walk through life loving others with the kind of care that finds expression in undivided attention and quality of time. May others find healing in our presence.  Amen.
