Christ Jesus Has Made Me His Own

December 7, 2010

Excerpt from Philippians 3:12–17

"But I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own."

Reflection by Anthony B. Robinson

At this time of the year, it's a good bet that we are pressing and feeling pressed. Lots of pressure. Preachers are pressed to produce just the right sermon, musicians the wonderful music, parents the best Christmas ever, and the rest of us to find the right presents for everyone. Lots of pressure - so much pressure that many seem to simply long for the whole thing to be over and done.

Paul writes about pressing on in his life and ministry and seeking to attain to fullness of life in Christ. But that is not just his doing and it's not all up to him. "I press on to make it my own, because Christ has made me his own." When we're feeling overwhelmed with the pressures of life or the demands of this season, it may be time to get back to this simple truth: Christ has, by grace, made you his own. There's nothing you have to do to make that happen. There's nothing you can do to undo that. Christ has made you his own. Today, breathe in that grace and truth, and then let the other things fall into their proper place and priority.

Prayer

We confess, Lord, that sometimes we work so hard at making Christmas perfect that we forget that you have already made that happen. Amen.
