Extravagance UCC Announcement

May 28, 2014

Extravagance United Church of Christ (UCC), a geographically dispersed, online faith community, committed to God's vision of being a congregation that welcomes and connects people online in learning and loving, and being a source of justice, peace, and hope in the world, is pleased to announce the hiring Rev. Nicole Havelka and Ms. Kimberly Knight to fill two part-time positions.

Rev. Havelka will fill the position of Minister of Digital Programs.  For the last five years, Havelka has served as a coach, consultant and trainer for churches seeking to renew their ministries with children, youth and families.  She recently served as an Associate Conference Minister in the Iowa Conference of the UCC where she found her passion for online ministry among geographically dispersed church leaders.  She currently serves as a half-time Area Minister in the Michigan Conference (UCC) where she continues to apply her passion and gifts for online ministries.  In addition, Havelka is a coach and trainer for the Center for Progressive Renewal and an associate consultant with Vibrant Faith Ministries.  Having volunteered with Extravagance UCC for the last several months providing creative leadership during Lent 2013 with Facebook Retreats and curating the virtual Stations of the Cross, Havelka now brings her considerable gifts for online ministry to this position that will create new online programs, and fulfill the mission of Extravagance UCC.

Ms. Knight will fill the position of Minister of Digital Communities.  For the last two years, Knight has served as the Director of Digital Strategy at Agnes Scott College, where she has developed, organized and managed the college's main social media and communication across media channels.  Agnes Scoot College and Extravagance UCC are beneficiaries of a career committed to online organizing and technology.  Knight is a social media coach and marketing consultant, online organizer and technology specialist with a passion and deep commitment to online ministry.  A regular blogger with Patheos.com, Knight's article "Sacred Space in Cyber space," which appeared in Reflections, a journal of Yale Divinity School, was quoted extensively in Church in The Inventive Age by Doug Pagitt.  She has a significant online following and is a creative presence in the virtual world.  During Lent 2013 Knight volunteered with Extravagance UCC leading a livestream Lectio Divina each Wednesday night and is currently leading a livestream Lectio Divina called "Extravagance UCC Thin Places."  In this new position, Knight will oversight and develop social media platforms for online ministry to help promote the online community and mission of Extravagance UCC.

Havelka and Knight will join Rev. Dr. Jo Hudson, Gathering Pastor of Extravagance UCC in a continuing effort to form a virtual faith community, reaching out online to those who are isolated, those who are unable to "go to church," those who are simply seeking a connection of faith, those who want to add to their current faith experience and more.  Together, along with volunteers, this Extravagance UCC ministry team will seek to be a visible online presence that proclaims faith in a still-speaking God of radical inclusion and relentless compassion.
