Emergency Appeals need support

The Hope from the Rubble Appeal was established in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks to aid those affected by the tragedy. As of Nov. 19, it had raised $698,384. So far, $206,000 has been sent to Church World Service, the relief arm of the National Council of Churches, for guidance and support aid. Another $44,790 has been sent to UCC Conferences in the northeastern United States for support, spiritual counseling and resources for clergy and religious leaders. In addition, trauma response teams are establishing training seminars on trauma and grief for groups of religious leaders. Qualified counselors already are available to communities in New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and the Baltimore area. Plans are for these services to be extended throughout the country.

Since the bombings in Afghanistan began, Church World Service has established the Afghanistan Emergency Appeal, which is bringing basic survival aid to some 105,000 Afghan people living in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran. The UCC pledged $220,000 to Church World Service for this Appeal, of which $110,000 in One Great Hour of Sharing funds has already been sent. As of Nov. 19, $23,836 of the remaining $110,000 had been raised through donations.

The Afghanistan Emergency Appeal provides shelter kits and food packages. Shelter kits cost about $90 each and include a tent tarp, plastic ground sheet and four blankets. Food packages cost about $256 per package and include a six-month supply of wheat, rice, beans, oil, sugar and tea for a family of seven.
