Ministry with older adults recognizes this continuing fruitfulness and celebrates the vital contribution older adults make to the lives of our congregations and broader settings of the church. Age brings with it qualities of perspective, persistence and prudence. Age also brings with it awareness of limits, vulnerabilities, and loss. The United Church of Christ celebrates these gifts, shares these losses, and encourages faithful living across the agespan.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau:

• 36.3 million - The number of people 65 and older in the U.S. as of July 1, 2004 (12 percent of the total population).
• 4.9 million - The number of people 85 and older in the U.S. in the same period.
• 86.7 million - Projected population of people 65 and older in the year 2050. (21 percent of the projected population).
• 147% - Projected percentage increase in 65-and-over population between 2000 and 2050.
