Following heavy rains, in February, families suffered loss from flood waters that overwhelmed the city of Bujumbura killing over 100 people. In parts of the city homes were destroyed as the force of the rain triggered landslides. With over 16,000 people affected the flood has been characterized as the greatest catastrophe that Bujumbura has ever experienced. In response UCC Disaster Ministries provided $2,500 to Global Ministries partner ILU (International Leadership University) who distributed rice, beans, soap salt and sugar to approximately 175 families living in temporary shelters.
