Typhoon Haiyan roars into Philippines, takes aim at Laos, Viet Nam, China

Typhoon Haiyan is battering the central Philippines with sustained winds of 170 mph with gusts over 200 mph.

Meteorologists say that if initial estimates based on satellite images are borne out, it could be the most powerful storm ever to make landfall.

The storm has forced millions to seek shelter in 20 provinces and at least three people have died, officials say.  Churches of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines are serving as shelters.

The region was already struggling to recover from a powerful earthquake in October, 2013.

Global Ministries and One Great Hour of Sharing staff has reached out to partners throughout the region offering prayers and pledges of support.  An OGHS solidarity grant is being wired to the United Church of Christ in the Philippines today to support relief and recovery efforts.

Typhoon Haiyan is projected to cross the Philippines and head to Laos, Viet Nam and southern China before dissipating.
