Hurricane Gustav made landfall at mid-morning today ninety miles west of New Orleans, near Cocodrie, Louisiana.  The extent of damage is not yet known. Heavy rain and flooding is projected throughout the storm impacted areas for the next several days.  Hurricane Gustav earlier left a trail of death and destruction across the Caribbean where Reuters News reports 94 persons died and tens of thousands of homes destroyed in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Cuba.

One Great Hour of Sharing disaster response grants are being rushed to UCC church partners in the Caribbean including the National Spiritual Council of Churches of Haiti (CONASPEH) and the DominicanEvangelicalChurch  (Iglesia Evangélica Dominicana – IED) to support their emergency relief and recovery efforts.

UCC National Disaster coordinators throughout the GulfCoast are in contact with their Conference networks and sharing regular updates.  All UCC staff and volunteers working on Hurricane Katrina/Rita rebuilding efforts in New Orleans and Biloxi have evacuated to safe locations.  The UCC is in partnership with a strong network of disaster response, recovery and rehabilitation organizations across the Gulf  Coast which will facilitate immediate and long-term response to Hurricane Gustav.

As additional information on the impact of Hurricane Gustav and opportunities for responding become available, we will share updates on

Please keep all the people impacted by Hurricane Gustav in your prayers and plan to make a generous donation to One Great Hour of Sharing/Hurricane Gustav.
