File South Dakota Ice Storms Impact on Native American Communities

In response to a request for assistance; and in partnership with the UCC South Dakota Conference, National Disaster Ministries has provided emergency funds to the Dakota Association of the UCC South Dakota Conference. The Conference provided $5,000; and, $3,000 was sent from the One Great Hour of Sharing special fund Emergency USA.

Iowa 'ecu-build' modeled on success in New Orleans Church World Service will bring volunteers and resources from across the U.S. and Canada to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, April 12 through May 21, 2010. Dubbed "Neighborhood: Cedar Rapids," the rebuilding effort brings together at least 10 agencies to replicate CWS’s Neighborhood: New Orleans" ecumenical rebuilding project--or ecu-build--which returned a dozen families home after lengthy displacement following Hurricane Katrina.

File El Paso, Texas: 2006 flood recovery continues
July 8, 2009
In August 2006, torrential rains flooded Southern Texas. Particularly hard hit was teh colonias (an extremely low income area) in the El Paso area. The United Church of Christ sent $5,000 to Church World Service to assist with immediate relief needs of blankets and personal care kits. In January 2009, El Paso Long Term Recovery Committee received from the UCC a grant of $3,000 to continue repairing homes that were damaged. The funds sent to CWS and the El Paso Long Term Recovery Committee were from the One Great Hour of Sharing special fund, Emergency USA. Earlier this year, repairs were completed on three homes. Wilma Subra, a native Louisianan, is a chemist who puts her expertise to work helping residents of communities who are either protesting the existence of a nearby industry that is exposing them to toxic chemicals or trying to block the construction of one adjacent to their homes. The UCC National Disaster Ministries has worked with Dr. Subra since the 2005 Gulf Coast Hurricanes to provide educational material for communities that were flooded and experienced possible contaminants.

The first big storm of the hurricane season continues to bring “residual” rain storms to southern states in the U.S. Tropical Storm Fay’s biggest impact was on the state of Florida, after the storm inched its way back and forth across the state, making landfall in Florida a record four times, there were at least 13 deaths and more than 1,000 homes damaged.

A massive rainstorm stalled over Washington and Oregon causing record level flooding in residential areas in both states. Officials are scrambling to assist residents stranded when the Chehalis River spilled over its banks on Monday December 3. Helicopters have rescued dozens of residents from rooftops, and many communities are cut off from ground transportation.
