The United Church of Christ expanded the Gaza Crisis appeal to include an additional $100,000 for immediate and long term needs. Some civilians are reportedly injured, stuck in their homes, and have no food or water.
GAZA CITY, 5 January 2009--Civilians injured by bombings are stuck in their homes without food and water and are unable to seek medical attention, says the director of UCC partner Ah Ahli Hospital,in Gaza City. Nurses working in the hospital are unable to reach their own injured children at home. (Click here for eyewitness stories.)
Palestinian medical sources report that over 500 people have been killed by the recent air raids in Gaza. Israeli officials report that five Israelis have been killed, four by Hamas rocket attacks.
Today, the United Church of Christ expanded the Gaza Crisis appeal initially issued in July, 2008, to include an additional $100,000 for the immediate and long term needs raised by the current crisis. One Great Hour of Sharing® funds in the amount of $25,000 have been sent to ACT* partners in Jerusalem who are preparing a shipment of humanitarian aid. An additional $75,000 in donations is urgently needed.
Food, medical supplies and plastic sheeting are being prepared for transport and distribution as soon as Israeli authorities open a boarder crossing. The YMCA will be offering trauma counseling to youth and families through 30 grassroots organizations throughout Gaza, as soon as the situation permits. The needs for repair and rebuilding are unknown at this time, but are anticipated to be extensive.
