In all more than 100 tornadoes were spotted in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia.

North Carolina and Virginia bore the brunt of several large tornadoes that travelled nearly 50 miles this weekend destroying homes, churches, and public buildings.  Thousands of people have been left homeless and reports of power failures have over 100,000 without electricity.  A State of Emergency has been declared in North Carolina and Virginia.

Hundreds of homes in North Carolina and Virginia were destroyed this weekend by a series of tornadoes that moved through these States.  The United Church of Christ offers prayers for the people who have lost family and friends; for people who survived and now will need assistance to recover; and for all responders providing immediate relief.

The UCC Southern Conference Disaster Response Coordinator working with the Conference Minister is checking UCC members and church facilities.  The Justice and Witness Executive Minister has been contacted for information about Franklinton Center staff and facility.  As information becomes known, it will be posted to the UCC web site.
