OXFAM Report: Rising to the Humanitarian Challenge in Iraq

In 2006, inside Iraq, 35,000 civilians were killed and countless numbers displaced.

Fearing for their lives, over 2 million Iraqis have fled to neighboring countries since the war began, with an additional 40,000 – 50,000 Iraqis leaving each month. Most of these refugees do not take any belongings with them.

Our United Church of Christ partners active in Iraq; the Middle East Council of Churches, Church World Service and Norwegian Church Aid, report that the situation for displaced Iraqi families in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan is grim and it does not appear it will improve anytime soon.  Consequently, these partners seek our assistance.  An initial goal of $50,000 had been set in August. We have increased our pledge to $100,000 in response to the crisis along with the goal to raise 100,000 signatures.

Your gifts are needed now to provide essential life sustaining food, water, health care and education for war-affected Iraqi families displaced in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. Help the United Church of Christ meet our goal of $100,000 in support. A generous gift of $40 can feed an Iraqi family of four for two weeks; $85 - warm coats and hats for 5 children; $100 - medicine and necessary tests for the chronically ill; a gift of $300 can assist with the provision of clean water to 3,000 patients per week at the Abu Al-Khasib district hospital and $1,000 can provide two months of vocational training and psychological counseling for 75 Iraqi children.  Please give generously.
