2008 Hurricane Updates - Sept. 5
September 5, 2008
Reports were received today that Hurricane Hanna – the third storm to his Haiti in the last 10 days - has left a trail of death and devastation. Over 200 persons are reported dead with the toll expected to rise. Half of the city of Gonaives is under water and several residents have had nothing to eat in 4 days. Hurricane Hanna is set to soak the East Coast of the U. S. this weekend.
UCC/Church World Service staff are in contact with ministry partners in Haiti who are providing emergency response as weather conditions allow. Many roads remain impassable. An initial OGHS emergency grant was sent to Haiti earlier this week.
Hurricane Ike is churning in the Atlantic with a current trajectory which would carry it over the Bahamas and into the U.S. Gulf coast next week.
2008 is proving to be a very busy Hurricane Season. (Click on links below for storm updates.) Tropical Storm Josephine, the tenth named storm of the season has formed off Cape Verde in the Atlantic Ocean.
As additional information on the impact of 2008 Hurricanes and opportunities for responding become available, we will share updates on www.ucc.org
