This letter was written to the Orlando Sentinel by the Rev. Kent Siladi, Florida Conference Minister, in response to the harrassment of Jenna Tosh, UCC member and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Orlando, in front of her home:
As a faith leader, I was devastated to learn about the protesters at the home of a local Planned Parenthood leader. I have supported the work of Planned Parenthood throughout my career. Planned Parenthood’s health centers provide quality, affordable health care in a safe and caring environment. Services focus on preventive care, including birth control, lifesaving breast- and cervical-cancer screenings, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and sex education that keeps our teens safe and healthy. One in five women has turned to Planned Parenthood at some time in her life for professional, non-judgmental, and confidential care.
Members of our church, the United Church of Christ, have stood by Planned Parenthood from its earliest days, more than 90 years ago. Faithful followers and clergy from other denominations have supported it as well.
Religious opponents of Planned Parenthood get plenty of media attention these days. I want people to know that those negative religious voices do not speak for me, and they do not speak for others from a wide spectrum of faiths.
