October 21 is African Partnership Sunday. For the second year in a row, Global Ministries invites African-American congregations and other interested congregations to celebrate and learn more about our relationships with churches in Africa.
"African Partnership Sunday started as a way to lift up our mission work in Africa among African-American churches," says the Rev. Ana Gobledale of the UCC's Wider Church Ministries. "But when the word got out, we had all kinds of churches knocking on our door. Now any church connected to our mission in Africa can lift up that Sunday."
The theme this year, "Bless the Children," is raising awareness about the plight of children in some parts of Africa where:
Many children are orphans, having lost both parents to AIDS;
War and other tribal in-fighting in Sudan, Angola, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have decimated the youth population;
Food, education and a living wage elude many families; and
Most families don't have the resources to pay for school tuition.
African Partnership Sunday is a chance to learn about African culture, the plight of Africans and how local churches can be part of a solution.
